Seasonal Affective Disorder

Some people experience depression during certain times of the year, most commonly in the fall or winter and recover in the spring. This pattern of mood disturbance, which must have occurred during the last 2 years without any non-seasonal depressive episodes, was previously called Seasonal Affective Disorder, but is now simply a subtype of Major Depressive Disorder (i.e, "With Seasonal Pattern"). As much as 5% of the population experiences a "winter depression."

Treatment:

The primary treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder usually involves light therapy, in which the individual uses a light device (e.g., 10,000 lux) for approximately 30 minutes per day. Light therapy in combination with Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) can reduce an individual's likelihood of relapse. In CBT people are taught to change the negative thoughts and behaviors that maintain depression.
